The apparatus described has been developed with the specific tasks facing pilots in mind and is intended to assess the state of their functions as reflected in indices of cardiovascular, respiratory, neuromuscular, central nervous, and auditory systems. Crew members can be examined during flight, while they are on or off duty, and during ground tests, while working on training apparatus, and before and after flight. The following data can be obtained by means of the apparatus while pilots are engaged in their occupational duties: the electrocardiogram, heart rate, respiration rate, systolic blood pressure, skin temperature, ambient temperature, electromyogram, psychogalvanic reflex and rate of response to photic and acoustic stimulation. While the pilots are off duty, it is also possible to study the electroencephalogram in two leads, the blood pressure by Korotkov's method, the dynamogram, the critical flash fusion frequency, movement coordination, and thresholds of auditory sensation.
