Equations of motion of a rocket are derived based on a simplified theory, both for the gas flow inside the rocket and for the air flow outside the rocket. Using a purely analytical method and with the aid of a computer program, the Pontryagin's optimal principles is then applied to minimize the propellent expenditure which is an increasing function of the duration T of the first phase of the rocket flight.
