Considers the safety of men travelling in the shaft, and describes methods of periodic proving tests of the overspeed and overwind safety equipment to ensure that safety is retained. The paper continues by describing an event recorder which would serve the same function as an aircraft black box when a winding incident occurs. The paper then considers the design of functional units for control of mine hoists which permits easy fault finding and maintenance.
