An essential characteristic for flight deck displays is that they should be readable at all levels of illumination, ranging from night flying to brilliant sunshine at high altitude. The filament display was initially used because of its inherent brightness which far exceeded that available from the first light emitting diode (LED) displays, which, in any case, were unable to meet the requirements of military environmental specifications. However, over the past few years, more efficient LED materials have been developed and manufacturing techniques have been improved, with the result that LED displays can now attain a brightness which permits them to be read at very high levels of ambient lighting (105 lux) and to meet military specifications.
