Early next year Line 4 of the Berlin U-Bahn will be switched over to automatic train operation. Under a scheme funded by Germany's Federal Ministry of Research & Technology, the Berlin U-Bahn has been carrying out trials since 1977 on a 1.6 km test track with Seltrac equipment supplied by Standard Elektrik Lorenz. Operation in passenger service will provide the acid test of technical and economic viability and determine what steps are necessary to achieve unmanned operation. Berliner Verkehrs-Consulting has been coordinating work on the project.
