Chopper control has become very popular for commuter service electric trains and subway trains, which start and stop frequently. This trend in DC train controllers toward chopper use is for energy saving and easy maintenance. However, even in a chopper controller, some problems still remain. They are the problems involved in conventional forced-air cooling of the power devices - thyristors and diodes - and such problems as blower noise and filter cleaning. In order to solve these problems flon-evaporative natural cooling has been developed. It not only needs no blowers, but also realizes a lightweight chopper controller. The blower elimination also means a reduction in the auxilliary power supply capacity. The chopper control equipment with flon-evaporative natural cooling described has been manufactured for the Hanshin Electric Railway Co. Ltd., (Hanshin) in Osaka, Japan.
