Automobile electronics may be classified according to dependence: first line dependence - these circuits include engine control (with signals to spark plugs, fuel injection systems, idle speed), automatic transmission, anti-skid brakes; second line dependence - includes car security (programmable digital locks), climate control; third line dependence - includes system diagnostics, digital trip computers and synthesised voice outputs; and fourth line dependence - includes totally independent electronics units such as radios, cassette mechanisms, CB radio, telephones. Opportunities for design in these fields are discussed.
