Explains the need for decoupling of in-car audio equipment to suppress interference introduced via the supply wires. The theory of capacitive decoupling is developed and the efficacy of inductive chokes and of pi-section filters is compared. The behaviour of the decoupling capacitor and its leads is analysed from its equivalent RLC circuit, and it is shown that the resonance of a typical 50 nF paper-dielectric capacitor renders it quite ineffective above 5 MHz. The frequency response of the impedance of a coaxial electrolytic capacitor is plotted, and experimental responses of classical and wideband types are compared. The solution proposed is a high-permeability magnetic material placed around the supply leads, which then behave as low inductances without distributed capacitance.
