These novel machines, either motor or generator, have as their basic operating principle the variations of reluctance which occur as the armature follows a reciprocating motion within the magnetic field. So far as is known, there is not yet any accepted terminology to describe them, but the principles are clearly described and illustrated. Many new and interesting possibilities are opened for applications of these machines, and some considerable research and experimentation in new technologies will be required. Among the possibilities is the elimination in certain applications of the traditional crankshaft and connecting rod hitherto essential for converting reciprocating-engine piston motion into the obligatory rotary movement (and vice-versa for pumps, compressors, etc.).
