On February 19 the President of Costa Rica formally inaugurated Central America's first electrification project for more than half a century - the 106 km from Rio Frio to Limon used principally to carry bananas for export. A hydro-electric station at Cachi will normally feed the line at 25 kV 60 Hz with a diesel station at Limon providing back-up. The 12 locomotives are dual-system as they are also being used on the 15 kV 20 Hz Pacific line electrified in 1930.
