The equipment of points and signals for 29 stations on this link between the capitals of the Ivory Coast and Upper Volta is described and illustrated. The points are operated remotely by electric motors and their position is monitored at the local control desk. The signals and associated speed-limit warning displays are associated with track circuits and electromechanical treadles. End-of-train detectors are activated by a transponder on the coupling-hook of the last wagon as it passes over a sensor in the middle of a 5 m long inductive loop between the rails. Routines are described for trains passing a station with or without stopping, side-tracking or crossing of another train; corresponding braking and acceleration curves are presented for 90 km/h expresses and 55 km/h freight trasins, with calculated values of time saved by the system in each instance. Foreseen developments include addition of starting signals with interstation block working, isolation of platform lines with electrical safety interlocks, and centralised traffic control.
