Examines the unique characteristics associated with military/government digital switching systems that set them apart from public/commercial digital switching systems. Requirements of military/government networks and their variations are identified, and the evolution into our present military/government switching systems is traced. An example is given of a typical military digital switch design, the AN/TTC-39 circuit switch, with its applications. Finally, the impact that military/government requirements have had on switching system design is cited and the future trend of military/government switching, that is, the evolution towards systems that integrate voice and data switching, is discussed.
