Where an electric railway vehicle drive system is concerned, the use of inverters for induction motor drive derives a number of advantages, such as in a traction motor's noncontact construction, large reduction in the number of contactors used for main circuits, adhesive performance improvement and reduction in the number of motors. Also, with the application of a large-capacity GTO thyristor, which has recently reached practical utilization, large reduction in inverter size and weight has become possible, accounting for about 80% of the installation area and weight, as compared with the chopper control system. Toshiba has been engaged in activities to put the inverter control system into practical utilization for several years. This paper introduces an outline of two different units of 160 kW induction motors and a 160 kVA GTO inverter, all lately being manufactured for trial purpose.
