While TGV has put French technology in the lead, West Germany's high-speed project has been moving from the drawing board to the hardware stage. Conceived as a rival to the Transrapid maglev scheme in the Emsland, ICE (Intercity Experimental) is a forerunner for IC2000, German Federal Railway's next generation of Intercity trains. The progress of the ICE locomotive is analysed and any changes in policy noted. In particular, the original concept of the Um-An drive and a different body width have been changed.
