Describes how BL Ltd. uses two lines of spot-welding robots to cut costs and improve quality in completing the assembly of unit bodies. The two spot-welding lines, on which 28 Unimate robots put in the finish welds to complete the body shell, stand out among the many automated processes used by BL Ltd. to produce the unit bodies for their Metro car. These robots labor in a factory added to BL Ltd.'s Longbridge, England, complex specifically to build the Metro body-in-white. According to BL Ltd. officials, the primary aim from the beginning was to improve body quality. Productivity was absolutely essential, they point out, but one cannot get productivity without first ensuring quality of manufacture. And the robot lines make a major contribution toward ensuring quality.
