Development of microprocessor-based train describers and route programmers led French signal engineers to experiment with a relay interlocking linked to a computerised route selector. The success of this technique prompted French National Railways to specify it for several signalboxes due to be built over the next 10 years. More significantly, further development work has resulted in a solid-state interlocking where the vital functions are carried out by programmed logic using microcomputers; a prototype will be installed at Chateauroux in 1985.
