The development of numerical methods for studying the transient nonstationary behaviour of a delay line discriminator is presented. Expressions are developed for the mean and the variance of the output noise process. For the cases where the output is stationary, power density spectra are found. Some characteristics which distinguish the results presented from previous work include the following: (1) any linear time-invariant filter is permissible; (2) with the exception of the power density spectrum calculations, all transient nonstationary behaviour is considered, and (3) no assumption has been made about the input signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Consequently, the threshold phenomenon of a discriminator is accurately analyzed. Nearly any input signal of interest can be accommodated.
