The UK Department of Transport has provided communications facilities on 2500 km of motorway. The creation of an extensive standardised network does, however, create logistical and cost-justification problems as pressure mounts in modern traffic conditions to introduce more and better facilities while at the same time ensuring that the best possible value is obtained from the remaining life of existing systems. This article describes how this situation is being tackled by the parallel actions of: extending the useful economic remaining life of the existing first-generation systems (NMCS1) on heavily used interurban sections; and introducing a new second generation of standard national motorway communications system (NMCS2) using microprocessor technology to make available a much wider range of facilities.
