The author describes the main elements of the new Sidney Harbour Bridge lane-changing system. There are four touch-screen colour video monitors for operator interface. Dual computers store graphic display information, system interlocking and current system status. Dual programmable controllers switch and monitor field equipment such as gantry lamps. Finally there are interlocking relays which are associated with each gantry and provide failsafe interlocking of gantry lamps and prevent unsafe lamp conditions.
