The reliability of the present US air traffic system is reviewed, and the evolution of reliability, maintainability, and availability for the future Advanced Automation System (AAS) of the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is discussed. Advances in fault-tolerant system design and the current goals and problems are examined. The availability and safety requirements of the AAS are presented, and the verification of fault tolerance is discussed.
