The requirements for advanced composite materials (ACM) for space applications are presented. The broad guidelines for resin matrix material selection are discussed, and some typical examples of Lockheed Missiles and Space Company development hardware are shown. Some of the unique design requirements associated with specific hardware components are presented. Designing with composites also presents some difficulties not inherent in metallic design. A brief discussion of these areas is included. Some emerging metal matrix composites and possible applications are discussed. (Hannebauer)
