As the strength of aerospace structural aluminum alloys increases, there is a tendency for toughness and stress corrosion resistance to be sacrificed. Recently introduced 7000-series aluminum alloys have had a favorable impact on this problem, but do not possess improved fatigue properties. Experimental 7000-series aluminum alloys produced by a powder metallurgy approach have demonstrated excellent strength, toughness and corrosion resistance, and, most significantly, improved fatigue performance.
