This paper describes the design process followed in developing a 100 ton freight car truck suspension system having coulomb damping. Classical linear vibration analysis was used for the conceptual design phase. Within the constraints placed upon truck suspension systems, a constant damping parameter, i.e., the ratio of friction force to static force imparted by the base, for all load conditions was established as a design goal. Optimization of the actual design parameters and comparison to existing truck suspensions was accomplished using the latest vehicle model developed by the AAR/TTD. (Kursetz)
