Power transmission in the case of heavy trucks is discussed and refernce is made to the conventional mechanical solutions adopted, and to the automatic transmissions employed on special types of vehicle. An account is given of hydromechanical transmission, i.e. the simple insertion of a hydraulic torque converter into the conventional mechanical layout, and its advantages and limitations are explained. The mode of operation of Fiat's hydromechanical transmission is then illustrated, with particular reference to the results of comparative road tests carried out on vehicles fitted with hydromechanical and mechanical transmission.
