Noise and vibration problems in drivelines are usually caused by transmission error which may be measured directly using circular gratings. Measurements of gear accuracy may be made quickly without removing gears from their housings. Typical results from gearbox and back axle measurements are shown and interpreted and the advantages and limitations of this form of measurement are discussed. (Wassmann)
