The ESA programme can be considered under four main headings: development of heat pipe components, heat pipe applications technology, qualification activities, and flight testing. The first includes such developments as cryogenic heat pipes, diodes, etc, whilst the second heading is concerned with heat pipe systems such as radiators. Under qualification activities can be grouped mechanical qualification and life testing, the latter mainly concentrated whithin the coordinated life test programme consisting of the ESA funded programmes at Dornier System and IKE and the nationally funded programme at CNES, Toulouse (France). The fourth item of the programme, flight testing, is particularly important, both is regards the configuration of improvement of analysis techniques and from the point of view of providing the confidence necessary for utilisation in projects. In June 1978 a combined ESA/German heat pipe payload is scheduled to fly on an Aries sounding rocket from White Sands. (Se)
