A new type of specimen has been developed to measure the shear strength of adhesive bonds between dissimilar materials. This bonded step-lap sandwich specimen has several advantages over existing specimen designs. It has been used (1) to determine the shear strengths of several adhesive/adherend combinations, and (2) to make a preliminary study of the effects of surface preparation on bond strength, as a guide to selection of adhesive systems of bonding high performance composities to aircraft components. An earlier theoretical analysis of the shear stress distribution in the adhesive layers was used to evaluate maximum shear stress at failure. Reasonable consistent values of this parameter were obtained for a range of geometrical and material configurations. (Kursetz)
