The use of precoated sheet steel for exposed automotive body panels is discussed, beginning with a brief chronology of the development of various galvanized and painted steel products since 1960. Attention is focused on the requirements that candidate two-side coated steels must meet to be suitable for application to body panels. The inherent advantages and disadvantages of the various approaches are presented with regard to performance and commercial criteria. Examples of alternative two-side coated steel products are discussed. (Wassmann)
