The problems of making design load predictions for novel high-speed ships are described, and the metKods available for making these predictions are discussed. The history of the development of the structural loads used in connection with the SES program is described and some of the techniques evolved during that program are presented. The need for an honest appraisal of acceptable risks is discussd and a methodology for estimating loads on a probablilistic basis is described. (Wassmann)
