Under the NASA-sponsored Energy Efficient Engine (EEE) Project, General Electric is developing technology which will significantly reduce the fuel consumption of turbofan engines for sub-sonic transport aircraft. One technology concept being pursued is active control of rotor tip clearances. In this paper, rotor clearance considerations are reviewed and an overview of preliminary study results and the General Electric EEE clearance control approach is presented. Potential fuel savings with active control of rotor clearances for a typical EEE mission are predicted. (Wassmann)
