Underwater Non-Destructive Testing is a highly complex and emotive subject about which many thousands of words have been written by eminent and extremely knowledgable people. Apart from touching on a few of the fundamentals as a way of introduction, it is not the intention of this paper to enter into the continuing discussion on the philosophy and reasoning behind, or implications of, NDT on underwater structures per se. Rather, its purpose is to relate how one particular company, Vickers Oceanics Limited, set about tailoring an NDT system around a diver lockout submersible in order to utilise certain advantages that this vehicle has over other alternatives at present in use in the North Sea.
