As lines are basic data for ship design and production, the authors have been developing programs to produce rough lines promptly for basic designers and fair lines for manufacturing processes by computers since 15 years ago. However, it had been difficult to express the designers' intention accurately by computerized numerical values. To solve this problem, a new method of numerical expression, having the functions of smoothing and interpolation, was developed. By using this method, its became much easier to incorporate the designers' itentions, and a new system was prepared to produce lines. By this system, the basic designers can produce lines having superior propulsive performance in a short time, and it is utilized for the development of recent economical ships. Besides, it helps to have man-hours and rationalize production owing to the increased accuracy of the lines fairing process. The latest state of this system is explained mainly from the viewpoint of the basic design stage. (Wassmann)
