Optimal strategies for the ratio selection of a continuously variable transmission (CVT) in a vehicle with flywheel energy storage are considered. Single path and parallel power-flow path model are used. This work presents the results of approaches that are alternatives to those considered by other investigators. Emphasis is placed on the kinetic energy recovered by the flywheel during vehicle deceleration between specified speeds. In the parallel path formulation, the CVT pump displacement is the control variable and appears linearly in the system Hamiltonian so that there is the possibility of solutions consisting of combimations of singular arcs and nonsingular arcs. In the latter case, the pump displacement is at a contraint value. Also, suboptimal strategies are presented. (Wassmann)
