Engines from the lorry and bus field can be applied to railcars with little further development using expertise gained in a much larger market to provide a reliable powerunit. Such engines have already been developed to meet legislative restraints on exhaust smoke, emissions and noise and this has been achieve without incurring large additional costs. Coupled to mechanical transmissions the power transmitted approaches the maximum achieveable through a drive to both axles of a bogie without wheelslip. Fuel economy shows considerable savings over first generation railcars. As an alternative a high speed V12 is proposed as an above the floor engine, using technology from military development to obtain a high specific output engine, having attractions in weight and space saving.
