Review of the sources of exhaust and noise pollution from locomotive diesel engines and the methods available for their measurement. The general levels from uncontrolled engines are established, and techniques for reduction are considered. Particular attention isgivento those pollutants that may be of concern when people are in close proximity such as when the locomotive is in the station. The various trade-offs which may affect the first cost of the locomotive and its operating costs are also considered, including fuel consumption maintenance, and durability.
