The forces developed at vehicle brakes during braking depend on a number of factors. The majority of these factors are stochastic by nature and therefore the braking force should be treated as a stochastic variable as well. It means that there is always some difference between two braking forces at the same axle producing a disturbing moment which acts on the vehicle during braking. Hence, vehicle stability under braking conditions is also a stochastic phenomenon. An appropriate mathematical model has been developed to describe the motion of a vehicle subjected to a stochastic disturbing moment. The model has been tested and demonstrates good agreement with the experiments. The stochastic disturbing moment, developed during braking, was studied in detail by means of set road tests. The test programme was comprehensive and vehicle stops were realized under different road, speed, load and other relevant conditions. All braking forces were simultaneously recorded and a computer was used to process the data. The information thus obtained offers a good basis for better understanding of road vehicle braking and particularly of factors defining the vehicle stability. In some cases it is possible to predict the probability of the loss of vehicle lateral stability.
