A concept is outlined for a coal-fired railroad locomotive. The objective is to reduce operating costs and to capitalize on the availability and abundance of a domestic fuel resource. The use of available and proven technology is emphasized. Design features include the use of on-board gas producers to fuel a spark-ignited reciprocating gas engine. A gas turbine could also be used. Electric drive, already familiar and reliable, is retained. Efficiency, costs and environmental protection are discussed.
