Most current standard quality control tests are based on simple loadings and there is a wide divergency of opinions on accelerated test load factors and test lives for passenger-car and truck wheels, except for 'kerb-swipe' type impacts where an International Standard exists. There is good agreement on wheel test standards for motor-cycle wheels. The importance of basing test loads on measured service load data is emphasised and new approaches to testing involving combined loadings to wheels with tyres are described. It is also considered important to develop a new approach to testing wheels of lighter construction particularly where plastics are involved.
