The reliability of multiple membrane power transmission couplings in the continuous process industry, has led many marine engineers to consider them as a means of transferring engine power to gearboxes and between gearboxes and the propeller shafts. Their ability to run without lubrication, their consequent maintenance-free qualities, their quietness in operation, and their elastic characteristics are all features which make their use attractive. This paper reviews the advantages of this type of coupling, the basic design parameters and their application particularly in naval vessels.
