It would appear that the high cost of energy has not only reinforced the basic attractiveness of the marine diesel engine, but is also responsible for an outburst of significant design evolution. The current rate of improvement in fuel economy is outstanding and it makes one wonder just what and where the limit is. Progress to date, and especially future progress, require effective onboard fuel handling equipment, well designed cylinder lubrication and better lubricants. The good communication between diesel engine designers and the oil industry must continue and both must assist shipowners to specify and use appropriate equipment and petroleum products. The marine diesel engines is achieving what appears to be unbeatable levels of efficiency in converting energy into work and this situation should continue at least for the remainder of the 20th century.
