This paper summarizes the results of a study of three alternatives to the OMDP baseline subsea drilling system. The alternatives were evaluated on the basis of performance, feasibility, and needed component development. Each alternative subsea drilling system includes the subsea equipment, riser, and riser tensioning systems. Named for their respective riser concepts, the three alternatives are: A Positively Buoyant Riser (PBR) supported by its buoyancy system, a Small Bore Riser (SBR) with a 14-inch minimum ID, and a Heavy Lift Riser (HLR) used with the existing heavy lift system on the 'GLOMAR EXPLORER'. Based on the results of the present study, the baseline riser is the most feasible for Ocean Margins Drilling. This study also suggests changes to improve performance and minimize problems with installation, retrieval and emergency disconnects.
