Specification of fiber reinforced ballistic armor is made complex by virtue of the number of variables that control ballistic resistance. A simple approach which avoids the need to exactly specify these variables is statistical modeling. Provided that the unspecified variables are controlled by a uniform processing method for armor production, statistically based design equations unique to the threat level are generated. This analysis yields the usual statistical parameters capable of specifying probabilistic confidence limits on the ballistic resistance. The value of this approach is that specifications for process control are a direct result, and deviations from expected performance are easily identified using standard statistical sampling methods.
