The paper describes the wide application of three-phase propulsion systems in diesel traction - including mixed traffic mainline locomotives for high speed passenger and freight use as well as heavy shunting locmotives. The equipment is described and its modular design, which enables all power classes to be accommodated, is illustrated. The ac traction motor, without a commutator requires minimal maintenance and reduces the unsuspended mass on the wheel sets. On the basis of more than 50 million running kilometres since 1971, the latest developments in three-phase technology will be discussed including the use of fast micro processors for controlling the inverters and the diesel engine together with new aspects of such micro computers for on-board fault diagnosis. The paper also deals with the introduction of GTO thyristors and the resultant effects on circuit simplification and fuel savings.
