European legislation now allows the addition of oxygenate compounds to motor fuels, nevertheless it will not be actual until economic conditions get favorable. This survey, based on linear programmation model of refining, tries to evaluate the weight of the different parameters ruling these conditions concerning ethanol in the France context. It underlines that ethanol's value - as motor fuel - is increased by the suppression of lead in gasoline, that it is linked to gasoline's one (itself linked to crude price and refining conversion coefficient) and that it must be discounted according to the transformations imposed to french refining industry by the evolution of oil products consommation and legislation.
