This paper describes the recent development of numerical methods which have accurately predicted the response of surface ships subjected to underwater explosion tests. The technique couples a nonlinear free-field calculational procedure with a standard structural element analyzer (in this case SAPIV) through a nonlinear structure-medium interaction condition. The fluid nonlinearities result from cavitation in the fluid, which in turn results from either reflections off the water surface or reflections off the ship hull. The fluid is assumed to be bi-linear in order to permit cavitation in the analysis. To date, structural response calculations have assumed the structure to be linearly elastic. Metal and composite materials have been included in various structures. The influence of energy dissipation mechanisms on late time responses have shown very good agreement with predictions of base motions into selected equipment items throughout the ship, in both hull and deckhouse. Strain responses have been calculated in deckhouse regions and agreement with experimental data has been excellent.
