The use of terne sheet (Pb-8%Sn) for automobil tank systems will be prohibited due to an environmental problem ob Pb in a few years. Some alternate steels have been developed so far by many steel companies. In this study the quality evaluation for newly developed resin coated steel (called X-coat) for fuel tank application was carried out. The corrosion resistance of the X-coat steel to both sodium chloride and gasoline was found to be excellent and be compatative to the terne sheet mostly used for the fuel tanks as well as the seam welding and brazing of this steel are also superior performance comparing to Al coat steel sheet having a high corrosion resistance. In addition, formability and paintability of the X-coat steel were proved to be remarkable. Following the results, it is concluded that the newly developed resin coated steel is most suitable for the fuel tank and can substitute for the present Pb containing terne sheet.he use of terne sheet (Pb-8%Sn) for automobil tank systems will be prohibited due to an environmental problem ob Pb in a few years.
