Potential opportunities for Hot Isostatic Processing (HIPping) within the automotive industry are discussed in this paper. The four main areas where hot isostatic processing offers potential benefits in terms of material properties are discussed. These areas are: i) the diffusion bonding of similar and dissimilar materials, ii) the near net shape forming of powder metallurgy parts, iii) the densification of castings and iv) 'active' HIPping for the surface engineering of ferrous and titanium based materials. The current and potential use of HIP in each of these areas will be outlined and examples given. Particular emphasis will be given to the process of diffusion bonding, including a brief description of the bonding mechanisms. Examples of both similar and dissimilar material diffusion bonds are presented and the key metallurgical characteristics of the joint are highlighted. HIP cladding using high performance metal powders and the benefits of such bimetallic components are discussed.
