Barkhausen Noise Measurements in connection with failure analysis have been carried out at WIWEB (Wehrwissenschaftliches Institut für Werk-, Explosiv- und Betriebsstoffe) for more than five years. The method has proved to be a fast and easily applied tool to assess the existence of residual tensile stresses in machined surfaces. Two examples with failures of aircraft parts with chromium plated surfaces are presented. One is a broken main landing gear axle of a transport aircraft. The other is a hydraulic cylinder, which developed a fatigue crack. The results were confirmed by X-ray stress measurements. In both cases Barkhausen Noise Measurements were recommended for failure prevention. Other applications at WIWEB dealt with torsion bars, bolts, spiral springs or roller bearings. Some experiences with the interference from prior magnetization and jamming by PC-Monitors are discussed.$
