With the advent of PLCs (programmable logic controller) and universal communication protocolls complex telemetry and control for all sorts of underwater systems can be realized. The network protocol PROFIBUS PA connects automation systems and decentralizes field devices, operating either with intrinsic safe transmission technology according to ICE 1158-2, or standard transmission technology according to RS485. PROFIBUS is used to connect the host computer to all the peripherals. Together with a virtual instrumentation software to setup controls and displays on a computer monitor a robust, simple, and easy to work on control system for ROVs (remotely operated vehicle) can be designed. Each device has its own control electronics.The control signal is converted by a fiber optic transceiver to RS485 for distribution to all the peripherals. A common five-wire interface consisting of a two-wire RS485 network link, a 110 VAC power supply, and a ground can virtually all cabling needs handle offshore. A PC based on Windows- NT serves as operator interface for the ROV and all its systems. The MMI (man-machine-interface) uses a Bridge View graphical environment from National Instruments. All instrumetation can be graphically programmed and designed in a way that is separated from the functionality of the instrumentation and controls. A navigation suite consisting of two touch-screen monitors and reconfigurable instrumentation and control suites or custom interface pages can be created. The control of local systems, thrusters, the hydraulic system, solenoid valves, cameras, internal and external sensors, navigation systems and power distribution is discussed. Distributed I/O controls will be the future for ROV and other underwater systems.
