In this work a commercial finite-element code has been integrated with a public-domain optimization routine for determining optimum shaft alignment. First, it is demonstrated that the finite-element method is an acceptable means for determining loading and stresses of a shaft system if bearing displacements are specified. The FE results correlate very well with accepted analytical solutions. The integrated optimization process is shown to duplicate results of previous optimization work when point bearings are considered. New modeling concepts are introduced by representing the bearings as distributed spring supports in the finite-element model. The distributed representation of the bearings is important in revealing and reducing excessive local stress by adjusting the alignment. The optimization process accounts for the distributed nature of the bearings. Current averaging techniques for determining bearing loading appear inadequate. A bearing can appear to meet a given loading criterion while local loading far exceeds the limits. This situation is improved by the new optimization process developed in the present work. In the future the distributed model of the motor bearings can be improved by requiring the total reaction moment of the motor bearings to vanish.
